You’ve been there since then
since when
the last time I saw you
and you were
standing
there
in out of the rain
under the eaves
with the dead flowers
in your arms
waiting for a train.
It’s been
seven years
since then
and today
was the first day I
finally said goodbye
inside my mind.
You were the start of it all
and I owe you for that
but I looked up today and saw
that time has now flown.
And now I’m going to have to
forget you and now you’re
going to have to
make it
like I always knew you could
all on your own.

Brilliant observation regarding saying goodbye physically and mentally. There is always a distance, like Bogey waiting at the train with a comical look on his face.
Your incisive skill with language is second to none.
And I feel that a word should be given to Boo, for his reckless freedom and ability to become instantly at one with something bigger than himself!

Yes, sometimes the emotional goodbye does not coincide with the physical goodbye, no matter what the cause of the separation. The final goodbye (the emotional one) can feel like an awakening: a (benevolent if wistful) release.
We are all haunted by throngs of ghosts! No wonder we wonder whether they (ghosts) are real (because they are real).
Thank you for your kind understanding AND your kind of understanding!

Yes, Mr. Bucephalus is an inspirational exemplar of enthusiasm!
He was always the biggest (hyper-sensitive) clown out of the nine puppies that were found in an alley in Texas with their mother; and remains so.

Hi, Dale, as you said in your reply to Leila, sometimes the emotional goodbye lags far behind the physical ones. Your poem does a great job of conveying that.

Thank you, David.
I think saying goodbye is one of the things poetry was invented for.

Hi DWB
This is haunting how the MC comes to terms with this farewell. But it takes awhile, and It’s like that sometimes. Not sure if we ever truly say goodbye to certain people who have made a mark on our souls.
Very well done!
