Octave for Janet by Tony Dawson

Spring and summer blossoms populated

our family tree that stood so straight and tall.

Then the blossoms gradually faded into fall

bringing the fruit that we so eagerly awaited.

When our winter hesitated and finally never

came, apparently because of climate change,

our blossoms bloomed and flourished once again.

An Indian summer in which to bask forever.

Our lives closely resemble the seasons of nature. Seems strange the seasons are caused by the twenty-plus degree tilt of the globe, and it all leads to poetry. But I’ve always suspected there is something much more going on, something whose existence we can only be vaguely aware of. Still, even vague suspicions are cause and effect.

I admire the lighthearted tone and the serious subject matter of this poem. The way you use rhyme in the poem is also effective, as is the title and the way it interacts with the poem (the “we” of the poem). This poem has unity; it makes a complete statement that’s both relatable and with a touch of mystery. The world will always need more nature poems and more love poems because the whole world cannot exist without nature or love, for starters. Great work.

Something of the Earth and family–all changing–always. It’s coming around again–in the strange seasons of climate change–could almost have an ominous message. Liked it.
