      Hi Leila

Thank you! Yes, these small poems, influenced by haiku (but not haiku), are meant to force the world down into a tiny space so the “big” important things can re-emerge from their hiding places. This little poem also has the virtue of being true, but not completely. Both things actually happened (or were seen by me) on the same day. The poem brought them together and made them occur simultaneously and now, frozen in time, like a picture in words.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve and THANKS for publishing these poems!

    Hi Dale

The title hooked me. I love to hear about the Midwest. Michigan is still a frontier in places. Where the wilderness abides and you better have a compass, and know how to read it.

    The land of Hemingway.

Great images of the deer skull and the “gloved” hare!

      Hi Christopher

Yes, the land of Michigan always resonates (for me and you and those few like us) with the spirit of Hemingway. Of all his works, the best of the best are set in Michigan (with a few exceptions that are set in other places). He never wrote better than he did in the Nick Adams stories, almost all Michigan-based.

And Michigan is not the same as Wisconsin is not the same as Iowa is not the same as Illinois is not the same as Indiana, etc. All midwestern states have their own character and flavor to a huge degree. These days, that can be seen the better the more one gets off the beaten path, too.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve, got any big plans for the holidays? An icy, brutal wind has moved into the Chicago area. The good news is that a lot of the ICE thugs have already moved out!

I hear what you were saying about scraps of poetry floating around. I have a few notepads and even some old floppy disk that now I can’t access.

It is great how you craft your poetry. And it’s great to know a poet such as yourself and Leila!

I find myself reading more poetry. Which is different from the past I used to write it. Now I’m usually stewing around in fiction—not happy unless I’ve got something good cooking. But the ultimate escape and misdirection of writing hasn’t changed. That is what I so liked about writing poetry in the past. Spending hours writing about the dirty snow and the wind blowing. The creation of something positive even if it dwelled on the gloom.

Yes Michigan is a unique place. Those Nick stories are great! Good point about the states being different.

Glad ICE moved on–It’s a crazy situation. Why do they hide behind masks? I find that to be sinister.

It makes a person question their own citizenship. The what ifs? What if they take it a step further. What if people who were on psychiatric wards were found unworthy or people that have drug problems. The old Nazi formula for euthanasia.

I’ve never felt that way before. Slippery slopes can lead anywhere the authoritarians want to take it. And the unwise (corrupt, and political) supreme court gave him immunity. They usually go against everything I believe in. Just like MAGA. Completely opposed to the environment.

I don’t have any plans. Got invited to a dinner, but I’m not always comfortable enough in my own skin to take the plunge of a social gathering.

        Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. As I may have mentioned I work in local Tryon Park. Rarely do I see things out of the ordinary. Birds are common, deer sometimes, rodents.

I found a deer skull one time. The rangers had no interest, so I left it somewhere I could find it in the future.
