Saragun Verse: Moonfog Returns

i

Moonfog Madrone nods in the lush field

In vegetable dreams seldom revealed

Little goes against Moonfog’s serenity

Save humankind the greedy enemy

ii

Little colored flags and a for sale sign

Once entered the doze of Moonfog’s calm mind

He cast an enchantment into below

Where the little fey gods flicker and glow

iii

“Bring forth a shake to unkind human steps

Those that never feel the earth is kept

By Forces more elemental than gold

Little gods I say do as you are told!”

iv

The flags and for sale sign went away

For when humans touched the field it swayed

Some said nature, others, the will of God

Moonfog cared not, for he was on the nod

    Always wonderful to see Moonfog!

It isn’t an accident that America is now “ruled” by a ruthless, environmentally unfriendly (a vast understatement) real estate developer.

The ones with the signs in their hands and the dollar signs for eyes who are willing to kill or sell anything are not just bad for the plants and the animals – they’re bad for the very Planet itself, and that includes (obviously) us humans.

Moonfog is someone who the West Coast poet Gary Snyder can relate to.

This kind of nature poetry invites the reader to be a participant in nature itself, and it also has a kind of mysteriousness to it that’s haunting in a good way. (And there are definitely at least two ways to be haunted, good and bad.) It tells the truth while veiling the truth which helps reveal it even further. And infusing a tree (and the trees) with more life (or the life they already have that’s hard for regular humans to see) is also an ancient job for poets, hereby brought up to speed for the modern reader.

132-year-old Dorothy Parker would also be proud of this! (Or is….)

  2. Hello DWB

Thank you! Moonfog is a proactive sort about protecting flora. A lot like the guy Bruce Dern played in Silent Running.
Been in the nineties this weekend, which used to be rare. I imagine orange trees will start sprouting.

    Thanks again,

“Where the little fey gods flicker and glow” That stopped me in my tracks–It was so beautiful!

I’m not an expert on poetry but like music–if it sounds good I like it. I like this–a lot!

    And a great environmental message!

Nothing bothers me as much as the little flags. I can’t stand the greedy plans they make. I don’t want the birds and animals losing their homes.

Empty lots and fields should not be touched–let alone the forest or even a single tree.
