Moonfog Madrone the Enchanted Tree
Wakes every morn for an hour at three
His branches like arms do mischief make
And mischief like weather his neighbors take
2
A poser Spruce rose up from the earth
“Scu-reew you Moonfog and your magic mirth;
You’re twisted like a crone all haggard and bent;
The best of your sap already spent.”
3
Moonfog Madrone woke at three
And listened to what the Spruce told his leaves
“Silly fool spoke when he thought I was asleep;
Forgiveness is divine but not root deep.”
4
A Spruce stump greeted the morning sun
O! Moonfog Madrone what hast thou done?
And the village was thoroughly amazed
By a rain of toothpicks lasting three days.
love this. I’m a bit of a poetry chav and prefer my rhymes to rhyme and my lines to scan. This hits all the spots. dd

This Poem has such SENSIBILITY, where the trees themselves seem to (or do) embody John Lennon’s INSTANT KARMA, and the world becomes JUSTIFIED through what William Blake called “The Real Woman – The Imagination.”
I had to look up “madrone,” which was wonderful.
Yesterday the phrase “witch field” kept humming around in my brains and reappearing in there at odd and cool moments.
SENSIBILITY = an appreciationist’s ability to understand, and respond to, complex artistic, emotional, and soul issues…
Trees are ALIVE and showing the Reader HOW alive while also creating a subtle linkage and allegory about HUMAN life, too: A. Shows the poetic (and very much real) Interconnectedness of all Things; and B. “Defamiliarizes,” or: makes the Reader SEE (perceive) the world in a new way, not just the trees (although first the trees) but EVERYTHING.
Awesome! Truly! AND all done with such Bukowskian and Blakean Simplicity that even an Extremely Intelligent Child could/would/will understand this….

Totally dig the illustration for this poem too, the way the cut-off trunk is “placed” right below the other trunk in the picture is resonant…the POV hits its mark…

Hi Dale
Pacific Madrones are limited where they grow, but here they grow in bunches. They often grow between other trees and sideways to gather sunlight. Ones like odd Moonfog are indeed peculiar.
Thank you again and for the sensibility. It is always appreciated (Moonfog is about a mile from here.)

The pine
was on the line.
To call the spruce
Who was beside a moose
The call was not sure
The pine reached a Douglas fir

I imagine there must be some of Moonfog’s ilk where you are.
