David Henson is today’s rerun. He is a fine person who likes animals and should easily qualify for heaven if he believes in such.
His talent is evident in…

Those are still some loud socks! Hope you are feeling better. Leave the shingles to the roofers.

This really engages the reader. It taps into a deep awful fear. The roach in the ear. Good God! The creep factor is off the charts! I like the “fire house and sword,” going at it inside the ear. Powerful images!
The MC is a compelling guy. There’s a loneliness to him that is no doubt the reality of some people. There’s humor too. Great story!

I really enjoyed re-reading this. Like everything else of yours that I’ve read, your writing has a lovely lightness of touch.
I see from Leila’s comment that you’re suffering from shingles. Heartfelt commiserations.

The best thing I can say today (by far) is that I agree with Leila’s intro sentence about heaven. You can tell a lot about a person from the way they write.
LITERARY HUMOR and MAGICAL REALISM are two terms that spring to mind when I think of your work. “Literary” humor means there’s a serious mind behind the jokes, and that is always evident in your work.

A shingles vax is in my future! Sorry Kennedy, you madman. (It’s on the to-do list with flu and covid vaxes but those kinda to-do lists usually get lost under notes for writing or dog walking adventures.)

I want to belatedly thank you all for your kind comments. They bring a healing all their own. There are obviously much much worse things than shingles, but, yeah, they’re better on the roof than on your face!

Hi David
My grandfather and brother both had shingles. Both told me it is like having burning oil on your skin. Greedily, but honestly, I say I hope they pass by my door.
Take care
